The Hot Zone

My introduction to these sauces and products came as an evolution-like process. First I saw the media articles come rolling across my computer screen. Then came the impressive list of awards through the Fiery Food Challenge and Scovie competitions. I even read a review or two about the sauces on another site […]

Announcing the next great thing in hot sauce reviews, and a project that we are both honored and privileged in which to be involved, here is the introduction from Al “Buddah” Goldenberg, hot sauce aficionado and chilehead:

All American Hot Sauce: A Review to be a part of

I met the Suffern Bros. of All American Hot Sauce at the Fiery Food Show in Albuquerque. The discussion I had with their owner Josh Goldstein, opened up my eyes. Here was a company with a mission. Sure they wanted to make money, but they wanted to share their wealth. They wanted to give back to America and to help the soldiers defending our country. Each person receiving their product for review got this mission statement:

MISSION

The All American Hot Sauce LLC is a corporation with a conscience.

Brothers from Suffern, New York, thought they could make a difference by reinvesting in America and supporting organizations that strengthen our country. We wanted to invest in the future.

The All American Hot Sauce donates 7% of its profits to organizations that share our commitment to improve the lives of Americans at home and abroad like the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.

Our mission is to join the ranks of companies like Ben & Jerry’s and Newman’s Own as they continue to work towards making the world a better place to live.

Noble enough for this hot sauce reviewer to take notice. They told me they wanted to get themselves out there, so they could take the steps in spreading the word about their mission. If you go to their website, you will see they have a separate page just in case someone out there wants to help more than just buying one of their products. Check it out: How you can help?

These guys have their hearts in the right place, and because I have always supported wherever I could, I wanted to do something special for these guys in the way of a review. They sell 4, well actually 5 products in all (Original- Full Bodied and mild, Southwest, Northeast and Bayou).

I had an idea to seek out Joe and Linda from www.hotzoneonline.com and see if they would be interested in doing a dual website review with www.tastethefear.com. I figured if we could get both websites to give them exposure at the same time, we could be really helping them the best way I could think of. I really wanted to make it work, and once Joe and Linda said they were on board, I had Josh send out the bottles to the review team. What I didn’t expect was the overwhelming generosity that came in the parcel that came a few days later. I received quite the bounty of bottles, I think it was 15 in all, but it might’ve been more. Now we have plenty of sauce to experiment with.

So starting on the month that America declared it’s freedom, every Tuesday we will be posting a review for each of their 4 signature bottles. We will kick things off with the Original Hot Sauce on Tuesday July 1st on www.HotZoneOnline.com. Each review will be posted by our 4 person review team- the infamous Passow, Troy aka Generallee, my Louisiana raised friend Cajun, and myself. Each Tuesday we will rotate the reviews between HotZoneOnline and TastetheFear. We hope you will follow the reviews on both websites and support a company that wants to make a difference. Thank you, and God Bless America!

The final tally has been in for our most recent Autism charity project, entitled Raising the HEAT for Autism. As many of you know, we embarked upon our fundraising by selling collectible hot sauces created and donated by CaJohns Fiery Foods, auctioning a ton of donated hot sauces and other spicy foods from various manufacturers and vendors, not to mention some cash donations as well.

Our project was quite a success compared to our first year’s project, and our efforts were rewarded by a nearly 500% improvement in how much money we raised compared to our inaugural project. Here’s how our donation was composed:

Sales of the “Epidemic Proportions” collectible hot sauce - $1958
eBay auctions of donated hot & spicy food products - $561.72
Cash donations through Firstgiving.com - $670.00

TOTAL FUNDS RAISED: $3189.72

If you consider that our donation last year was only $656, we are quite proud of our success and would like to thank each and every person who donated products or their time & effort into making this project quite a success.

We are already in the planning stages for our next project which we’ll be embarking upon sometime towards the end of this year, so stay tuned for that!!

Our Raising the HEAT for Autism project officially ends tomorrow, January 31. Most of the bottles have already been shipped out to their new homes, and several more will go out this week.

Anyone wanting a bottle needs to write to us via our CONTACT FORM and reserve one and make payment arrangements by midnight tomorrow. After that, we have to gather all the cash and make our grand total announcement for money raised and get a check ready for Autism Speaks for later in February.

Thanks to everyone for their support with this. Our next project is going to be even more huge. Stay tuned!!!

In a warm-up for the amateur chili cookoff coming up at the North Market here in Columbus in 3 weeks, we decided to try our luck at another local cookoff event…this one called the “2007 Souper Bowl Cookoff,” which was a chicken soup-making contest at our local synagogue here. Soup is good food, and we eat a lot of it. Chicken soup in particular bears the distinction of being called Jewish penicillin, and we wanted to make a spicy chicken soup worthy of our hot & spicy tastes. As you can see with the picture above and below, we won the Judge’s competition (there was a people’s choice also) for this event. Joe’s picture and our recipe will be printed in the Columbus Dispatch on February 6, 2008.

As Linda pointed out when the trophy came home…we think that we are officially attention-whores. The winning recipe is here for your viewing:

spicychickensoup.jpg

Joe & Linda’s Hearty-but-spicy chicken soup extravaganza

8 bone-in whole chicken breasts (7 lbs)
3 gallons chicken broth
3 large Vidalia onions, diced
3 cups diced celery, medium-cut
5 bay leaves
5 tbsp CaJohn’s Gourmet Garlic Herb spice mix
½ bottle CaJohn’s Jalapeno Select Puree
1 jar (16 oz.) My Favorite New Mexico Foods’ Green Chile Sauce
5 tsp ground thyme
5 tsp fresh parsley, minced
1-2 one-pound bags of egg noodles (more or less depending on how much noodles you want)

In a 5 gallon stockpot, add the raw chicken breasts and enough chicken broth to completely cover the meat. Boil for approx. 2 hours or until meat is cooked all the way through. Turn off heat and remove chicken from broth. Remove all the bones, dice up all the chicken meat, and return it to the broth. Add all the other ingredients, except the egg noodles, to the broth and allow cook at medium heat for several hours. Add water or more chicken broth as necessary to make soup the desired consistency or to dilute the spice level. Near the end of the cooking time, add egg noodles and simmer for approx. 20 more minutes or until eggs noodles are at desired firmness. Serve hot.

Makes 5 gallons.

After yards of tape, wrapping paper, bubble wrap, and whole bunch of paper cuts, the long-awaited Epidemic Proportions collectible hot sauces are shipping out today. We were able to ship out a few of them already, but a bulk of the rest that were ordered will go out today. To those of you who have been patiently waiting after paying for them weeks ago, you now know that the USPS will have those for you relatively soon. For anyone who decides to crack the sauces open to eat, we’d love to hear some feedback on the taste. So far, the feedback has been good.

Enjoy!

The Raising the HEAT for Autism charity event is coming to a close at the end of January, but not everything that’s been donated has been sold just yet. There are a few auctions on eBay that are active on eBay until tomorrow that you may want to check out:

MEGA Chileheads starter kit for Autism charity

How has no one bid on this yet (the one above)? After we reduced the price a few more $$$, it’s an even more amazing deal.

Serious Chilehead starter kit for Autism charity event

One bid on this item, but this one’s still available as well.

Hot sauce/Chilehead starter kit for Autism charity

There are four (4) of these still available, and even these are going for roughly half their retail value. Please take these off our hands for a good charity cause.

Within the next 2 days, we’ll start the final of our auctions for our Autism charity…and we’ve saved the best for last. The one and only Uncle Big has donated some items that we’ll be auctioning, and we are tempted to get in on the bidding ourselves.

Stay tuned!

We just uploaded the video for all to see, this since a reporter and camera crew from WBNS10-TV here in Columbus was here to shoot some video of us regarding our Raising the HEAT for Autism charity project, as well as the sale of our Epidemic Proportions hot sauce. We just uploaded it to YouTube, and we’re so excited that it was so well done.

Yes, many bottles are still available. If interested, send us a note through our CONTACT FORM to reserve one today.

By: Devil Duck on January 17, 2008- 10:38 pm

devilduck.jpegHello everyone! Devil Duck here. Some of you know me, some of you don’t, and some could probably care less either way. That being said….

My real name is Lynn Duck, and I’m an amateur sauce maker trying to make the big transition into professional arena. I’ve loved hot and spicy foods ever since my family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area back in 1979 and I first popped a little jalapeño pepper at a Mexican restaurant. My life changed forever.

Since our beloved Passow will not be able to make the annual pilgrimage to Albuquerque this year to cover the Fiery Foods Show, I thought to myself, “Well, I live here and I’m going to be at the show anyway… I can cover it!” Joe and Linda were kind enough to agree.

So, here I am! I just need to shake off the writer’s rust (which is what I’m trying to do here) and I’ll give you open to close coverage complete with “after hours” goings on. Look for some lesser known companies to appear in my coverage as well as interviews, pictures, and reviews of the events, all of the wonderful hot sauces, snacks and BBQ sauces. Since this will be a very daunting task, I’ve recruited my lovely wife to help cover the BBQ side of things (She’s a BBQ freak!).

If you’re going to be there, look for the guy in the picture. I’ll probably have a black leather trench coat with a flaming shirt on, sweat on my brow and a camera in my hand.

See you there!
