Passow’s Eyes Glaze Over For Heartbreaking Dawns

Picked up Heartbreaking Dawns Lemon Aji Pepper Glaze at this years Fiery Foods Festival in Columbus, Ohio for one reason and one reason only; it’s made with Aji Lemon peppers. Ever since I grew them last year, I’ve been kind of obsessed with that strain. Awesome flavor, medium heat, and the flowers of C. baccatum are quite stunning.
Heartbreaking Dawns Lemon Aji Pepper Glaze Ingredients: Sugar, cider vinegar, Lemon Aji Peppers, Trinidad Seasoning Peppers, butter, pectin.
First thing I have to point out is a discrepancy in label to pepper name. They have it listed as Lemon Aji when in fact the botanical name is “Aji Lemon” or “Aji Lemon Drop”. Minor error in the grand scheme of things though, onward with the review. I love the color of this jam. It’s vibrant, bright yellow just like the pods of the pepper. Thick, but not too thick making it a breeze to spread.
First up is the taste of sugar but it isn’t like some jams that are nothing but sugar. Then come that lemony zest of the Aji Lemon followed by a hint of fruitiness of the Trinidad Seasoning Pepper. The cider vinegar is just a hint of a flavor on the back end and you really almost have to look for it to find it.
The heat on this is a low end medium. It slowly starts to build on the tip of the tongue then moves to the center of the tongue and slight back of the throat tingle. Nothing insane just good enough to give you an extra pick me up in the morning on toast. Speaking of toast, that’s the main thing I used this on. Eggs yokes on toast with a side of toast slathered with Lemon Aji Pepper Glaze and a cup of coffee…what a wonderful way to start the day.
All said and done, this is fantastic. It easy to use, sweet but not too sweet, has great flavor and a nice little bite. It’s the only product that I’ve found so far that features the Aji Lemon. Heartbreaking Dawns, keep up the great work!

Thanks for the review Jonathan. I just want to also mention that this is currently a “festival only” specialty item. We do have a number of cases that we will have at upcoming events but not on our website. They will be available online in the fall of 2010.
