I’m so disappointed that Scott Roberts beat us to the punch with his excellent review, but even our bit of duplication with our take on this product should only reinforce the quality of the product.
The Phoenix White Cheddar Jalapeno cheese blend is a simple but effective product design. If you like grated cheeses (and we do), you may find yourself wondering why someone hadn’t bothered to make one that was at all spicy. We have been big-time users of Kernel Season’s Popcorn Seasonings for quite a while, but as we said…none of them combine that cheese and spiciness that we really wanted to find.
Enter Anthony Spices and their selection of spices, mixes, and BBQ sauces. I met Lance Anthony (let’s call him “Lancy” like his FFS name badge had him tagged) in New Mexico and appreciated the passion by which he has created and fostered his products.
What I like about this product: FINALLY, a spicy cheese blend…and not one that is loaded with chemicals and artificial colorings to make it look appetizing! The premise is basic, simply white cheddar cheese and jalapeno seasoning. The heat level is really as indicated by the product’s description and this should have fairly broad utility.
One use we have that may be unique to my family is getting my kids to eat their veggies. Most of us know that kids are a tough sell on stuff like green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and the like. However, my young ones will eat it with a fair amount of grated cheese on their food…and they like this seasoning, even with its addition of heat. My fave use for this has been with salads, pizza, and eggs, but the best use for this is…whatever you want it to be.
What I don’t like about this product: After using this in what seemed like mass quantities in various foods, it seemed a little salty to me. I guess that’s fine with pouring over popcorn, but with other foods I needed to rein in the amount I used. This is also a one-size-fits-all in terms of package sizing. I’d like to see this come in multiple sizes, as you may go through a little, a lot, or a truckload depending on your affinity for it. You should be able to get more, or less, as you want to get it.
Overall recommendation: A simple product done well, this one is worth you giving it a try. If you have ANY affinity for grated cheese, and want it to be a little spicy, then this is a product for you. Don’t forget to tell “Lancy” at Anthony Spices that we sent ya. Enjoy!

Just curious…did your kids find this spicy at all? My young’uns found it a bit too hot for them (they’re still in spice training mode).

My older son tried it, but won’t eat much of it. My younger son (age 4) is much more the chilehead, and he really will eat it on his veggies.

I sprinkled some on my nuts, but it didn’t work well. Might be too salty beforehand. Macademian nuts that is. Awesome on tortilla chips and popcorn. Lancy makes good products. :p

I am so glad you guys/gals like our product….I am even willing to let the “Lancy” comments pass by the wayside. To fix the nametag would have taken an act of God so I was hoping no one noticed. Oh well. As far as our product, it is a simple recipe that creates a complex and versatile product. We do not add any salt to the cheese, the Wisconsin cheese that we use is naturally salty based on it’s own production. I really appreciate you guys doing a review and I really love to get confirmation that what I have been doing with Anthony Spices makes people happy. Keep up the good work and I will keep doing what I am doing. Lance (”Lancy”)

It is good to see come to grips with your new name Lancy. Just because of a typo, you will be better remembered by us.
Not to mention some good products. Did you ever get the video thing worked out with Justin? Also, will you be attending the NOLA show, the last week of June? I think we would really push that cheese product on the New Orleans group. Might work wonders on top of some gumbo.
