Passow’s Reviews His First Chutney

I know. Strange isn’t it? In my whole illustrious career of reviewing spicy products, I’ve never once reviewed a chutney. Well, that’s all about to change. Fiery Peach Chutney comes from the newest breakout sauce company, Heartbreaking Dawns and appears to be an chunky, category melding, chutney.
Heartbreaking Dawns Fiery Peach Chutney Ingredients: Peaches, dried cranberry, crystallized ginger, red peppers, sugar, garlic, Habanero peppers, vinegar, mustard powder.
Up first comes a nice sweetness from all of the ingredients. Right off the bat we have Cranberries mixing with Peaches, then the crystallized Ginger following that. Chunks of garlic that have absorbed a massive amount of flavor come in next with the Habanero after that. There’s no mustard flavor (thank god) and no vinegar taste.
The ginger and cranberry both flow in and out of the after taste for quite a bit and I’m really liking that. Spice wise, it’s not very. There is a slow creeping heat that peaks in the back of the throat briefly, and then fades to a memory. It’s also very consistent in that area as well. Eat, small heat, fade. Eat, small heat, fade. No building heat here.
My only complain with this is the pepper seeds are a bit chewy which is in direct contrast to the soft ingredients. Other than that, this is really a fantastic chutney! It’s not overly sweet, the heat is accessible, and the flavor is colorful! I definitely would seek this one out.
Taste: 8.9, Heat: 3.4

Right on. I knew there was going to be some serious dissapointment When I met Johnny McLaughlin of Heartbreaking Dawns last weekend and he told me they hadn’t brought any product to swap! I just didn’t realize it would be this soon! Congrats Johnny!

It isn’t chutney anymore, it is trail mix spread. No argument, it is good. Too bad they ran out before I could buy me some. Now I know why they are heartbreakers.

Hey I was right across from them at the North market and they were selling that stuff faster than you could shake a stick. I never got to try it but judging the look on peoples faces it got to be good. But I do have a couple of these guys sauces and boy the sure are all good. Johnny and Nichole keep up the great work guys.

Johnny, you will make Buddah’s smile that much bigger with that name. Passow, lay off of the mustard references, we all know how you feel about it. You taste it even when it’s not there! You better stay away from anything authentic Caribbean or Caribbean-Style. Just think of how much better a reviewer you could be if you acquired a taste for it. .Johnny, kepp up the great work brother!!!

Sorry, CaJohn, can’t go with the name Johnny, not only does the spelling of my actual name prohibit it, but that shortening of the name irks me
As for the mustard issue, I always point it out to show that I am biased towards that taste. Recently I tried mustard for the first time in 20 years (which makes a total of two times I’ve had mustard straight in my life) just to force myself to see if I could take it and I damn near puked. I don’t like that taste, so I state it. Sorry, but there’s no way around it. Not everyone knows how I feel about it (those that know me do though), so that’s why I state it in the reviews.

You can’t treat all mustards the same. It is like grouping all hot sauce in the same category. All mustard seeds are different like peppers are. I do not like yellow mustard, it is just not to my liking, but spicy brown typically is. This won’t change your mind towards mustard, but maybe if I introduced you to the one I gave to Joe and the others at the North Market it might change your mind. The jar is on me, if you say yes, and I will get one for you the next time we meet up.
