2010 Fiery Foods Show, day 3

The Sunday of the show was not that much of a time to relax for us bloggers. Up early, we made it to the show for the trade hours as usual…which became much more of an opportunity for us to visit some selected vendors to get a little shopping done. As we endured the onslaught of the crowd at 11am, we decided that a strategic retreat to get a little lunch was in order. After considering a number of options, we loaded up and headed out to Albuquerque’s Old Town.
Our first choice was Duran’s Central Pharmacy, but our patience in getting to the area resulted in us getting there as the restaurant closed for the day. Luckily just across the street was Garcia’s Kitchen, so that became our ultimate lunch destination. After a short wait, I sat down to a very filling lunch complete with green chile stew with carne adovada and a burrito also slathered in the same carne adovada. While not being the best meal that I’ve ever had, it was tasty enough that I scarcely had room for any of the mound of fluffy sopapillas and honey which came as part of the meal.
Our bellies filled to the point of being uncomfortable, we sauntered back to the show to hang out as the show came to its conclusion. Some of the bloggers made our way to CaJohn’s booth to help inflict a little agony on the crowd with pouring out sample of Black Mamba and Mongoose for the gathering crowd. Given some of the reactions to people trying these sauces, I came to appreciate why some of the sauce makers have a little sadistic streak in them when they have people who want to try the hottest sauce they make.

The show came to a rousing conclusion as the ever-energetic Danny Cash administered the big chop to Sam McCanless’ unmistakeable mohawk. After relaxing for a bit so that they vendors could finish packing up their booths, we headed off to Gardunos Restaurant for the traditional Sunday night destination for dinner after the show. I have been a big fan of Gardunos in past visits to Albuquerque, and this dinner only reinforced that. Besides that, they also make a margarita that is roughly the size of my head:

A very fun day, even if I may not remember 100% of how it ended after drinking what seemed like a 1-gallon margarita!
Next up will be a recap of the show. I have quite a few opinions of how I thought the show played out, and it covers things both good and bad. Stay tuned!

That was a killer day! The green chili stew at Garcia’s was really good as was the carne adovada burrito.
Dishing out the pain at Cajohns booth was a lot of fun!
My day and yours yours sounds almost like a carbon copy right down to the Mega-margarita! (except for my knee dislocating…..youch)

Sadistic streak, whatever do you mean?

Good set of reports, Joe. I’m looking forward to seeing what you write in your next post. I intentionally left out some of the negative things in my report I just posted up today such as the German Chili Police extract incident. But I may revisit the topic sometime in the near future.

Great so far Joe, I feel like I am still there. Are you still feeling that big ass drink?

Sounds like a great Sunday! I wish I had this play by play while I was on my way back in the plane ALL DAY SUNDAY!!! I tell you mentally I’m still out in New Nex, last night I made mini fajita spiced burgers with monterey jack and a Green Chile sauce straight out of the “Red Or Green” book….oh the southwest….the southwest!

Johnny, you can keep the Southwest. If I never hear the question,”red or green chile?” I will be so happy. Not once was I blown away by this chile concoction no matter the color. I don’t get the fascination outside of queso dip. Give me a slice of NY pizza or a juicy cheeseburger anyday.

Buddah, I am revoking your Chilehead card. You have been demoted to “associate” standing. Congrats to life at the kiddie table until the next industry show. – Joe

I’m somewhere in the middle. I was able to tolerate the green/red chiles somewhat and may eat them once in a while in the future, but I wasn’t crazy about them. My first meal when I first got back to St. Louis was BBQ, and God was it good! Just what I had been needing all weekend…

I still don’t think we had one single meal with a representative example of good red or green chile. Gardunos would have been one of the better choices for that, but even Buddah was full enough that all he could stomach was a girly drink and some queso.

I gotta tell you guys, the chiles grow on you. I didnt like them at all when I first moved here and now look. I dont go a week without some green. Next year, if I am able to stay longer, we will all go to the places my friends who live there go (and it isnt Gardunos). They are considered touristy by the locals.
