Not to toot our own horn, But all of Race City’s sauces & mustards have no to VERY little salt. If it contains salt, you will find it as the last ingredient, not the second or third…

So what’s wrong with salt? I couldn’t live without it. I even put salt on watermelon.

“So what’s wrong with salt?”
Some people are on a low sodium diet for health reasons.
” I couldn’t live without it.”
Actually, NO ONE can live without salt. It’s esentale to life functions.

Nothing wrong with salt, Steve, but even though I don’t necessarily have health problems I try to watch how much I consume. I get enough sodium from processed food and fast food that I don’t need extra from the stuff we cook ourselves.

“What’s wrong with salt?” Well like Jon said we all need it. I started looking at the everyday foods and noticed I was probably consuming 2-3 times the recommended 2300mg a day (sometimes more). I’m concerned about the potential health risks associated with a high sodium diet like higher blood pressure which can lead to heart attacks and strokes(which run in my family).
If I can find sauces that taste good that are lower in sodium, those will appeal to me. I eat a lot of hot sauce!
I love salt, but I also love life!

Our Caffeinator sauces have no salt.

I hate salt. I rarely use it (ie: sprinkle it on things). Although one thing I do enjoy is taking asparagus, coating it in some EVOO or almond oil, sprinkling just a little bit of Celtic Sea Salt on it, cover it in tin foil and grill it up…….sooooooooooo good…
But ya, I hate salt.

All of CaJohns sauces are low in sodium, the Krakatoa and Selects have NO salt. It diesn’t say what heat level is desired, but ours that do have salt are VERY low in sodium content.

I completely forgot about your select series, CaJohn! Duh! Going to have to incorperate that into my answer bank when people ask for low/no salt sauces at the store.

Jonathan-You can also add to your list the Chuck Evans’ MONTEZUMA Brand line of SMOKEY CHIPOTLE Pepper Sauces, HABANERO Hot Sauces, and our SPICY RED Everyday Pepper Sauce are all extremely low in sodium, about 1/2 of 1%.

1/2 of 1%? I think I got this one. You carry the 1, and then you move the decimal over 2 spots and then half that number once. So ummm, that should be 20 grams/ ounce? I think that is right. I left my short bus cow-q-later at the office.

I’m going to try and put together a list for those who are interested. I’ll be asking around in New Mexico next month.

One of the big things that is misunderstood about salt content is that when a maker uses traditional mash (any mash that is available on the market) it contains anywhere from 12-20% salt by weight right out of the container. We make our own purees from fresh chiles and never add salt to the mix. Just vinegar and chiles. So when a maker says he adds very little salt, he is actually adding quite a bit to the sauce along with the chiles he puts in it.
It’s not the maker’s fault, he bought it salt laden. Mild to wild Pepper & Herb Company’s products contain low salt as he uses the puree (mash) we make. Montezuma Brand is using our puree as well. It is impossible to get the salt out of the mix when you use traditional mash. Even the ones we add salt to, are very low sodium. A little salt goes a long way to improve flavor, the commercial mashes add it to preserve the mash.

Thanks Cajohn! This has been one of my concerns for those manufacturers that use mash. Glad to know that!!!
See ya soon!

Low sodium diets are essential for people with certain heart conditions or inner ear disorders such as Meniere’s disease. For this reason (a vestibular problem) I’m limited to hot sauces with 10 mg. or less of sodium per teaspoon. Does anyone know if such hot sauces are available by the gallon or half gallon?
By the way, people on low sodium diets are a great market for hot sauces. Cutting out the salt leaves a lot of foods tasting bland. Hot sauce is a great way to put more flavor back into your food.

Hi Pete,
One of my biggest pet peeve’s is SALTY HOT SAUCE. I do not feel salt makes hot sauce taste better. I personally prefer the natural flavors. I am trying to make a few home brewed hot sauces that have heat and flavor with NO SALT.
CaJohn’s Killer Cayenne is by far the best hot sauce I have ever had and it is only 35mg of sodium. You do not taste salt, but have full flavor of the hot sauce. I highly recommend trying it and other CaJohn’s products.
I use fresh hot peppers on or in just about everything. A low sodium hot meal is to bake hot peppers with sweet red/yellow peppers in olive oil for about45 mins at 350. Pour the entire mix over whole wheat pasta. Add hot pepper flakes or sauce if you wish.

Hi Judi -
Thanks for the recipe suggestion. I just wanted to add that hot sauce makers could increase sales to the low-sodium crowd if the sodium content of their products in mg. per teaspoon is available on a web site. I’m sure there are lots of great products I’ll never discover because I can’t afford to buy hot sauce without knowing whether the sodium content is within the range I can handle.
It’s true that sodium is an essential nutrient, but you don’t need very much. (I get about 500 mg. a day, mostly from meat and hot sauce.) Most Americans get many times more sodium than they need. If you can eat a lot with no ill effects then no harm done. But getting too much can definitely lead to health problems or worsen medical issues you already have.

Our Uncle Dennis’ brand of sauces are all in the “Very Low Sodium” category – 25 mg or lower. Our only “high” sodium product is our “All Purpose Spice” which is in the “Low Sodium” category @ 55 mg and ALL of our products are “Gluten Free” (however, not certified as such.) All the rest of our spices are salt free.
