The Hot Zone

My introduction to these sauces and products came as an evolution-like process. First I saw the media articles come rolling across my computer screen. Then came the impressive list of awards through the Fiery Food Challenge and Scovie competitions. I even read a review or two about the sauces on another site […]

There’s nothing that will warm the heart of someone in central Ohio than thinking about Key West Florida. This is especially true if you like Key West and even more especially if you love Key Limes. I am one of those people. Combine Key Lime into a salsa, though, and you have something really special.

Ingredients: tomatoes, onions, turbinado sugar, jalapenos, key lime juice, vinegar, garlic, salt, spices

First Impression: Surprising. I honestly didn’t think it was going to taste so sweet. Though, that’s not a bad thing. It just took me aback a bit. Once I got past the party in my mouth, I really enjoyed the finer parts of this salsa. Also, I believe you can’t ever go wrong with Key Lime in anything.

Taste: Sweet and tangy. There’s a black pepper taste that hits you right away too…which is really nice. I think this could have more uses than typical sweet salsas because of the lime factor. What I’ve used it for already is a great addition to tomato soup. Tomato soup tends to be a bit sweet to begin with, so this a brilliant addition. I love using it directly on chips, but if you’ve read anything about sweet salsas and me, I love to make habanero hot nachos and use a sweet salsa. I’ll say it again, the hot spiciness of something salty and habanero based blends very well with something sweet.

Overall Recommendation: If you like sweet salsas, this is definitely something to try. The lime is a really neat feature to a sweet salsa. I would say that this salsa is going to be particularly nice when summer rolls around. I can definitely see this being a great commodity by the grill, especially with chicken. I’ve already tried this in chili and I have to say it’s fantastic. So, if you like adding salsas to your chili, please do yourself a favor and try this.

Just so people know where to get this, we produce this salsa for Hot Shots out of Charlotte NC. Thanks for the good review, it is a bit different as far as salsa goes. It goes really well on top of NY style cheesecake.
