Passow Enjoys Some Wine In His Salsa

Our friends over at Heather’s Heat and Flavor have come out with their own salsa. I must say, this is quite the tasty treat!
Heather’s Heat and Flavor Peach and Blueberry Merlot Salsa Ingredients: Tomatoes, peppers (hot and mild), merlot wine, sugar, dried onions, vinegar, salt, peaches, honey, garlic, blueberries, dried apple, black pepper, chili powder, cilantro, calcium chloride, and citric acid.
Along with the very nice label this sauce is absolutely gorgeous to look at. Like a Jackson Polloc painting this sauce has splashes of color and ingredients just sitting their, enticing you to eat them. And eat them I will!
The sweetness of the peaches and the texture and flavor of the blueberries come directly to the front of your taste buds then the tomato follows suit. The merlot wine creeps in and remains as a background taste that lasts quite a while. Back before they injected artificial sulfites into wine (I’m allergic to those), Merlot was one of my favorite wines to drink. The slightly dry taste is a familiar reminder of a dizzying, sideways viewed past. The slightly fruity and plum like taste of the Merlot wine was an excellent choice to be included with the rest of the ingredients in this sauce.
Next the peppers hit and it’s hard to pick out which ones they used. For sure I detect bell peppers (in fact, I just chowed on one that seamed to miss the grinder…big sucker), then I think there’s come Cayenne and Chipotle. Following those are the onions, apple and black pepper. The black pepper rounds the 3/4 taste mark off quite well and also lingers a little bit.
There is a slight garlic taste here and the citric acid tugs a little at the sides of your mouth. The only things I can’t taste are the cilantro and the honey. This sauce is naturally a sweet one but not overtly so.
The heat on this is smack dab in the middle of my 1 to 10 scale and matches the “medium” mark they gave it on the label. This is hot enough to satisfy the chili heads out there but mild enough to have everyone enjoy too! Oh ya, did I mention it’s kosher as well?
Taste: 9.7, Heat: 5
