The Hot Zone

My introduction to these sauces and products came as an evolution-like process. First I saw the media articles come rolling across my computer screen. Then came the impressive list of awards through the Fiery Food Challenge and Scovie competitions. I even read a review or two about the sauces on another site […]

Well, about two weeks ago I got this at the Fiery Foods show in Columbus. It’s Chuck Evan’s Montezuma Smokey Chipotle Squash, Black Bean and Corn Salsa and I received it from a very eager Chuck Evans. This is his brand new salsa and according to him, “It’s probably the most nutritious salsa you’ll ever eat!”

Chuck Evans’ Montezuma Smokey Chipotle Squash, Black Bean and Corn Salsa Ingredients: Tomatoes, tomato puree, onions, corn, black beans, zucchini and yellow squash, chile peppers, Smokey Chipotle Pepper Sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, herbs and spices.

Well, looking at the ingredients I would have to agree with Chuck. This thing is filled to the brim with healthful ingredients! As far as appearances go the salsa contained in the bottle is beautiful. Large chunks of all in ingredients are floating around in the thick tomato base giving it a very gourmet look. Place this out at any event and I’ll guarantee this stuff is eaten up so quickly it’ll make your head spin (CAUTION: Seek medical advice if any one of your guests heads start to spin).

The tomato flavor comes through instantly and is followed up by the black beans. The zucchini comes next and is almost instantly covered up by the Smokey Chipotle Pepper Sauce. I generally find the taste of zucchini to be a very mild one so it’s not that the chipotle sauce is too strong. Actually, it’s spot on. You can tell this has chipotle in it but it mingles with the rest of the flavors and into the aftertaste, nice and smokey.

Now comes the corn and onion. I guess it wouldn’t be a salsa without onion. In fact, outside of my homemade salsas, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a salsa sans onion. Up next on the flavor palate is the squash (bout time that showed up on my radar, I was getting worried) which is followed by the slight bite of the lemon juice. The juice hits you on the front part of your tongue which is different than the side of the tongue hit I’m used to. The garlic flavor is not very pronounced and I find it comes in after the herbs do (I think I detect a slight hint of parsley).

The nice thing about all the stuff I had of Chucks is the heat he has on the label is generally the actual level of the product within. This one says “Medium” and it fits my medium criteria perfectly! Nice small burst of heat that lingers and then dies down to a nice mouth glow. Another fine quality product brought to you by the person who gave us Smokey Chipotle!
