The Hot Zone

My introduction to these sauces and products came as an evolution-like process. First I saw the media articles come rolling across my computer screen. Then came the impressive list of awards through the Fiery Food Challenge and Scovie competitions. I even read a review or two about the sauces on another site […]

I always enjoy a good salsa, don’t you? The chunky bits of ingredients, the textures, and the bombardment of flavors, all packed on a small tortia chip. Yep, salsa sure was a good invention. The one salsa I’m going to be review today is brought to us by the letter “7″ and by Tahiti Joe!

Maui Pepper Company Sunset Salsa: Pineapple Mango Ingredients: Tomatoes, mangoes, pineapple, onions, celery, Jalapeno Peppers, balsamic vinegar, carrots, sweet peppers, mustard seed, sea salt, cumin, black pepper, Habanero peppers, natural herbs and spices.

We all know of my love for mango by now so this “medium” salsa should satisfy that lust. Let’s crack it open and taste a little bit of it! Right away there is quite a large rush of sweet that hits. It’s a little hard to distinguish which flavor comes before what because they all merge together quite well.

First up is the mango and pineapple which account for the majority of the sweet in this salsa. Then come the tomatoes which are not as large of a flavor as in most salsa. It’s almost a mildly flavored tomato. Coming in next is the onion which is very prominently featured especially if you look at the side of the bottle. Slightly transparent slices of it float around in the myriad of colors.

The balsamic vinegar is next and is a nice alternative to just plain old vinegar that most companies use. Celery arrives on the palate in and is followed by the sweet peppers and Jalapenos. The mustard seed has become soft and is easily smushed under the force of your teeth but occasionally I find myself cashing one around in my mouth with my tongue…it’s a salsa AND a game!

As far as the rest of the ingredients go, they have been over ruled by the aforementioned veggies. There’s not enough Habaneros in this to get the flavor of the pepper but just enough to give it a slight back of the throat burn. The side of the label states that this sauce is “medium” and I’d have to agree with it. While not your typical over the counter quote unquote medium sauce, this actually meets my criteria for medium.

If you are looking for a kick though, this salsa also comes in “hot”. It has the same flavors but a much larger kick!

Hey, does anyone know if T.J’s is still around. When I emailed him it bounced back to me saying “hot unkown”. Which means his email address doesn’t exist anymore.
