With the spread of what I call Naga Mania comes more and more interesting, super heated product. From Jolokia Peanut Butter, to sauces and powders, this trend is really sweeping the industry and Brian Marx from Heather’s Heat and Flavor is surely taking advantage of it!
Upon purchasing some new sauces and chipotle peppers (they sell dried peppers there too, Cleveland), Brian snuck a little bonus package into my bag. His brand new, nifty, handy dandy 100% Pure Bih Jolokia Chile Powder Keychain! Made of stainless steel and coming with a nice keychain, this is the perfect thing to keep with you incase you forget to bring your favorite sauce because it’ll be right there on your key ring!
At first I was worried that the finely powdered pepper would escape from the container but my worries were soon abolished. I noticed that the screw top is equipped with a rubber o ring which mean nothings going to escape this bad boy if the top’s screwed on tightly.
But enough with how nice the 2 inch tall canister is, the question is how’s the taste and heat? I opened up the container and sampled a very large scoop of the brown powder contained within. YEP! THAT’S A JOLOKIA ALRIGHT!!! The huge rush of pain immediately strikes my tongue making every breath and attempt to swallow an agonizing affair with the raging inferno that is ramping up in my mouth. Memories flood back in from my first experience eating this vicious pepper as I ride a brief endorphin rush. Well, the heat is definitely there (if eaten alone) but the taste is slightly different.
The taste is similar to the other Jolokia’s I’ve eaten but not exactly the same. This taste more along the lines of a Chipotle Jolokia. Brian gets his chilies direct from India (where this sucker originates) but he receives two kinds, dried pods and dried powder (which is what goes into the keychain container). What case probably is is that the source of the peppers dried them by heat (the most efficient way in respects to time) which would account for the slightly “darker” flavor and color of this powder. It’s not bad, but it’s not exact. What it is though, is a great thing to have with you when you want to spice up and add some extra flavor to a meal when you are away from your main stash of pepper products.
Major chili-heads like me may end up using this whole thing in one sitting but never fear! You can get more powder and refill it! I will say, this ditty is perfect for the chili-head on the go! Just do me a favor, don’t breath in deeply when you are using it or when you open the container…trust me on this one.

I notice the “smoky” flavor too on the Jolokia we have. I believe it’s from the mechanical drying of the pods, perhaps accomplished a little too quickly in order to overcharge all of us poor Americans wanting the heat rush… If you, or anyone else wants to buy it in bulk, we have plenty.
