The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

We know this article has a few days lag time with us since its publication, but does anyone know where to find this sauce or what company manufactures it? Even the wisdom of Google only lets us find distributors and eBay listings. Anyhow, this article from the Ascension Citizen was pretty cool, so we feel like it needs publication again:

High flying sibling of ‘Butt-Burner’ soars with International Space Station
By Wade McIntyre, The Weekly Citizen

PRAIRIEVILLE - Somewhere, orbiting the earth in cold, dark space, a chili-head astronaut is playing with fire.

Hiram Davis, the Prairieville hot sauce creator of Bayou Butt-Burner Louisiana Pepper Sauce would have it no other way.

When Davis received an email from NASA in late September asking if he sold a particular one of his nine hot sauces in a packet or plastic bottle, the hot sauce maestro responded with alacrity.

“My sauces are normally packaged in glass bottles, so I produced some bottles in plastic with a small opening for squeezing,” he said. “I told NASA if the sauce was to accompany an astronaut, I would be super-thrilled.”

Davis was so happy with Japanese-American Astronaut Daniel Tani’s request for “Fireball Hot Sauce” so he could take some into space that Davis sent the space agency a free case.

“Fireball” sports a label inviting hotheads to “Get a tan where the sun don’t shine,” which is “Butt-Burner” parley for heat that burns, but does not torch.

The high flying sauce is “pretty hot” according to Davis, but not the hottest in his line created over the past ten years. It is made from equally balanced portions of cayenne and habanero peppers, plus minced garlic, vinegar, spices and sea salt.

I have a couple of these bottles on my shelf. One signed by Bret and Leroy. LOL!!

Here’s the info from the bottle.

I also have some of the other sauces made by them. One in particular that’s cool, the Bayou Love Potion. I have an older version of the label when it was called Bayou Viagra.

I’ve never tried the sauce, but it sure looks good. Lots of chunks of stuff visible through the bottle.

Okay, I know I said this before on another site but, when I grow up I wanna make hot sauce and send it into space! My father in law couldn’t wait to tell me about this. He was a little dissappointed to find out I already knew about it.

Hey Sam, I know what ya mean about your father in law. My Grandmother came into the shop one day with a few newspaper clippings about the new “ghost” chile. She was disappointed when I sat a couple of bottles of opened sauce on the counter right there that contained them. And then I showed her pictures of the one that I tasted at WOF (JJ’s). My late grandfather grew peppers and is who I give credt to passing on the love for spicy foods to me. My grandmother may have been disappointed to know that I already knew about the chiles, but she was intrigued to see the sauces and information I had on them beyond the newspaper articles. :D

I’m just disappointed he named it Fireball, I’ve had a sauce named that for 10 years. It’s one of my original Hot Spots line.

Anyway, way to go! First hot sauce known to have been in space!

To all that are interested. Joe and Linda will post the pictures on this site. If I knew how I would post a link. Instead I’ll just email the pictures to them. I don’t even have them up on my site yet, cajunsauce.com
NASA had to remove the foil backed labels due to electrical concerns. If you zoom in on the picture with earth out the window, you can plainly see the name. I hope everyone enjoys them.
