The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

I have just come from reading a hot sauce review at The Hot Sauce Blog…. I am still smiling so hard, my cheeks hurt.

Chilli sauce reviewer and hot sauce maker Louie of Old Skool Pyrate hot sauces of Wisconsin has written a hilarious if somewhat scathing review of Batten Island Mild Gourmet Sauce. It was so funny or sad, and I really can’t decide which, I just had to share it with you!

Louie writes:

But I digress. I poured the sauce onto a plate, well, really I shook the heck out of it, and it fell out in a big “glop”. I thought to myself how this wasn’t going well already, and walked away. A couple minutes later my six year old stepson asked me (I swear to God I’m not making this up) “Why is there cat poop on the counter?”. To make matters worse, I eventually got the courage to actually try the stuff

I’ve read reviews on sauces that looked bad and I’ve read some on sauces that tasted hideous, and some on sauces that were so hot that I wouldn’t recommend tasting them, heck, I’ve even written some, but never in my time as a lover of all things hot and spicy have I ever met a hot sauce that looked bad and tasted hideous but had no heat! What were these people thinking?

I have personally never tasted Batten Island Sauces, but I have to agree with Louie, if something that bad can make it to market, maybe we really do need a hot sauce standards committee? After all, if your sauce is going to look and taste that bad, it should at least be so hot that consumers need to sign a waiver to put it in their mouths.

Thanks Tina, for writing about my review (Batten Island Gourmet Hot Sauce)! I’m kind of taken aback by the responsences the review received-I wasn’t trying to be funny. I was just writing what happened with that sauce, all in one day. And my review turned to anger because there are sooo many “makers” of “hot sauce”, people who just want to hop on the current hot trend wagon. And what’s worse, I think Batten Island is made by a hot sauce company that is just over-extending it’s product line. I do feel, though, that a standards commitee would be a great idea for not just the established producers, but also the “little guys” that truly have great sauce and do not want to go mass market (like the botique wine makers). Volunteer, to set certain standards for those who know that they’re in this for the product, not the money. True lovers of hot sauce, who want to share their passion with those who know what true hot sauce is. A guild, perhaps? You know what I mean? If you have any ideas that you want to share, please let me know. Again, thanks for the attention, I really do appreciate it. Treat every meal like it was your last, Louie.

I’ve actually had this hot sauce, and I’m quite surprised with the reviews that I’ve read about it. Now, I didn’t have the hot, but their “Xtra Hot” sauce. I would rate the heat at about an 8/10 on that scale that most people use to give heat a rating (it’s comparable to something like Dave’s Gourmet Hurtin Habanero heat-wise). So it’s not a super hot sauce, but it’s a nice “edible hot.” I also really liked the taste. I haven’t had something that tasted like this sauce before. The day that I got it, I picked it up in the morning and I took the cap off and it smelled kind of sweet and spicy. That’s a combination that I personally enjoy, so I actually put some on my pancakes. I used the whole bottle in a couple of days on everything from pork chops to chicken and fish and whatever else I ate. I think that the reviewer gave it a harsh review under unideal conditions and that this is a great hot sauce that deserves a second chance. I’ll be eating it again!

Also, to the comment that it’s made by a hot sauce company that’s “over-extending”, that’s simply not true. This is made by a small company that has very few products (I know that they make a mild/hot/xtra hot in this sauce, and I don’t know if there is anything else that they are doing). Batten Island is a company unto their AFAIK. Hope this helps clear things up!

I have also tried this sauce and believe it’s sole purpose is to “not” taste like every other hotsauce on the plant. Hence the term”Gourmet Sauce”. I personally know the owner of the company and I can assure you this is a spin off of NOTHING! It was put into production because the owner was tired of the “same’ol same’ol”. The taste of this sauce accompanies many different food products. You will never live a lifetime long enough to try them all, that is as long as your mind is “OPEN”.
