Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Last year while we were doing our “Hot Rock for Autism” charity fundraiser, we were privileged enough to receive some celebrity help from Michael Anthony of Van Halen fame. Michael has his own hot sauce, and now he had a line that includes mustards and a BBQ sauce. In fact, we have a bottle of his hot sauce that we plan to review at some point in the future.

There was a recent article in the Waterloo Chronicle out of Ontario, Canada that talked a little about the upcoming Van Halen tour, and specifically Michael’s non-involvement in it. Here’s a great snippet where he talks about his own hot sauce and love of hot stuff in general:

And along with celebrating the music, Anthony also celebrates one of life’s simple pleasures, the chili pepper, with his own brand of Mad Anthony hot sauce, developed by the makers of his favourite hot sauce, Ring of Fire.

“It was in the mid-90s when I first tried Ring of Fire,” said Anthony. “We were shooting the video for Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do and the caterers brought it. I had never used hot sauce before, and now I like to put it on everything. I’ve even tried it on ice cream — it was definitely interesting.”

Anthony liked Ring of Fire hot sauce so much — he got a Ring of Fire tattoo, the image taken from one of their bottle labels. Putting as much emphasis on flavour as he does on heat, his own hot sauce line also includes hot mustard and barbecue sauces available through his online store, www.madanthonycafe.com.

Like Ring of Fire, Anthony says he uses only the finest ingredients in his hot sauces — a list that includes pimiento peppers, sweet red bell peppers, and generous helpings of fresh roasted garlic and habanero chilies, flown in fresh from the Caribbean.

“We like to kick everyone’s asses and get a full sweat going,” laughed Anthony.
