The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Couple cook up salsa business
BY CARI MERRILL
CariMerrill@coloradoan.com

Q. How did you get involved in the salsa making business?

Jay: Danielle has been cooking for years, and her sauces have stood out to our friends and family above all else. When we were in our fourth year of college at Colorado State University, we decided to start home canning them and selling them to the people we know. After we graduated in May 2006, Danielle wanted to pursue getting our products into stores … and here we are today, growing exponentially and “enlightening taste buds,” as we like to say.

Q. Where did the name of your business come from?

Danielle: My last name is Gilbert (but not for long - Jay and I are getting married Oct. 21). “Gilberto” has been my nickname for as long as I can remember - it was on the back of my rugby and lacrosse jerseys in high school, and it’s just stuck with me ever since. I’ve always regarded my cuisine as “gourmet goodness” so we just put it all together one night while brainstorming with some friends.

Q. What kind of salsas do you make?

Danielle: Right now, we have five salsas ranging in heat from medium, to extremely spicy. Three of our salsas are more “traditional,” meaning there are no extras that make them more funky than the standard salsa. Our Sort of Smokin’ Mango Salsa and Smokin’ Hot Roasted Green Chile salsa are our two most popular flavors because they stray from the norm and bring an extra punch of flavor that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s very distinctive and that’s what we’re most proud of.

These guys are awesome. Danielle and Jay make great stuff and their marinara is freakin’ rad. Everything they make is with the freshest ingredients like your mama would at home and it tastes better than most mama’s recipes. GGG is a line of sauces - even with cilantro in the recipes. (NOTE: I hate cilantro. But I still eat their stuff.)
