There are chileheads and there are those we call the haters. This literate gastronomically-challenged dunderhead wrote the following article for the South Bend Tribune about his opinion of some of the hot sauce world we all know and love. Maybe some ought to smack him upside the ass with a bottle of “Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally“….
Spice is nice, but too hot is not
TIM CARRIGANWhenever I’ve traveled, I’ve noticed there is always a convenience store or liquor store with a wall of different hot sauces.
Not that I spend most of my time in liquor stores when I’m on vacation, but I do seem to find myself in one now and again.
I am always drawn to the hot sauce display because it has some of the most disgusting names imaginable: Everything from TNT to Vicious Viper to, one of my favorites, Heine Hurtin’ Hot Sauce and Jelly.
These are just a few of the thousands of different kinds I have seen. Most of them have a really sexual name or a disturbing visual that I cannot mention here. Nevertheless, they make me laugh.

Point of view on the article from Sweden;
Well, if you don’t LOVE the taste and you can’t see the fun and you can’t appreciate the irony, then maybe, just maybe you should stay off writing about it?

Short Bus Hot Sauce, glad he didn’t see that one. Might of been scarred for life!

I’m not a big fan of the “x-rated” named sauces, most of them aren’t really that good anyway… But to bag on the entire industry because he got offended in obscene in and of itself.
What a moron.

As far as being a Hater, I think you missed the my point, LOVE the dirty names and bottles. Thats why I always seek out all the cool bottles and names. As a Professional Chef I’m just not a fan of someone who doesn’t know how to use your products, overkill BAD, moderation GOOD. Love the website, and as far as being spanked by Sally, let me check my schedule and I’ll get back to you. Yours Truely Tim Carrigan

Hey Tim,
We didn’t know you were a professional chef…go figure! We always love it when an author whose article we’ve highlighted makes an appearance on the blog, be it that they’re happy or annoyed about the mention. Keep using the hot stuff, amigo. Perhaps you’ll have a desire one day to try something as OVERKILL. As for us, we do the moderation thang as well. Cheers!

You know, there is some value to what Tim writes… anyone who has ever tasted Vicious Viper or Dave’s insanity knows what Tim is saying here… It may have a really cool label or a really funky name, but some of those bottles hide concoctions that are just hideous to anyone with tastebuds… That said… anyone really into the hot sauce knows that there are two kinds of chiliheads, those that want the heat and those that want the flavour. Fortunately, this blog welcomes both!
Then again, something tells me that Tim is one of the flavour guys.
That said…
Tim, let us know when you want to write an article about hot sauces that concentrate on making good food hot or hot sauces that are just simply good hot food — We at the Hot Zone can give you a fantastic list.
(This is me, ignoring the impulse to enter a blatant self-advertisement here!)
As for moderation… my DH always says “Take life in big bites; moderation is for monks.”
