Great article in the online Denver Post talking with a maker of wing sauce that we’d love to meet or even just to try his sauces. We love to see someone making a go in the hot & spicy food business who loves what they do and wants to make quality products with all-natural ingredients. Check out their website at www.captainspongefoot.com.

Interview: Paul DiBello

A conversation with Paul DiBello, founder of Granby-based Captain Spongefoot Trading Co., a maker of natural Buffalo-style chicken wing and table sauces
By The Denver Post

Q: How did you get the nickname “Captain Spongefoot”?

A: Well, I have two artificial legs. I’ve worked around boats all my life. I had a sailing company up on Lake Granby for a number of years. My old prosthetics were made out of foam rubber, and my feet being always wet – spongefoot.

Q: How did you go from owning a sailing company on a lake to producing wing sauce in a warehouse in Aurora?

A: When we started the sailing company, it was Captain Spongefoot Sailing Co. As the drought hit the Western states, some issues developed in Grand County regarding marinas. As marinas got sold off, we saw a real reduction in the amount of business that we had with the sailing company.

I always loved my wing sauces and chicken wings. So the company kind of morphed in 2004, into Captain Spongefoot Trading Co. In 2004, we went to the National Buffalo Wing Festival, and our sauces won first, second and third prize – first time out of the box.
