Chuk Evans, being the master chipotle maker and all around groovy cat that he is, served me up a jar of his latest creation, the Femme Fatalii line of salsas. Coming with a very seductive label with outlines of two curvaceous nude females, this sauce carries the name Menage A Trois Smokey Chipotle Black Bean & Corn. Let’s see if it meets the usual high standards that I expect from his salsas.
Ingredients: Tomatoes, tomato puree, onions, corn, black beans, chile peppers, Chuk Evans’ Montezuma Brand Smokey Chipotle Pepper Sauce, Lemon Juice, vinegar, garlic, herbs and spices.
After opening the top and peaking over the edge into the bottle, I knew right away that is going to be good. I can see almost every ingredient. Large chunks of tomatoes, whole kernels of corn, diced black beans, and slivers of onions sat in the jar staring back at me with the look of fear in their eyes. For they knew that in a few moments, they would meet their doom at the hand of my mouth.
Down the hatch they went, chip after chip of this tasty creation tantalized my taste buds. The first thing I pick out is what I’ve come to use as my basis for what Chipotle should taste like, Chuk Evans’ Montezuma Brand Smokey Chipotle Pepper Sauce. It really enhances this salsa with its beautiful, thick, smokey flavor and it’s slight warming heat level. If you’ve tried his Smokey Chipotle Sauce, you’ll be able to easly tell that Chuk threw a lot of it in here, but not enough to overwhelm the rest of the flavors.
Up next comes the tomatoes, then the black beans, and then corn. The black beans are cooked just right so that they crumble and almost melt in your mouth. I find that most salsas these days over cook their beans causing them to basically be mush instead of remaining just tough enough to keep their shape and insides intact. Then finally the sweetness of the onions hit. The vinegar is barely testable (always a bonus in my book) and I do detect just a slight hint of garlic and lemon.
The label says “Medium” and I’m going to have to agree with it. The full strength of the heat blasts your tongue almost immediately and has a very nice linger to it. It’s a little bit hotter than Chuk’s Montezuma Smokey Chipotle Sauce due to the addition of the other peppers in the salsa. All in all, a very tasty salsa that will liven up any social gather that you might have.
