The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

fm_black.jpgWith spicy mustard, you can never be quite sure what you’re going to get. Will it be a little spicy or a lot spicy? Yellow or brown? Watery or not watery? Chunky or smooth? Ok, well maybe the last one is more descriptive for peanut butter, but you get the idea. There’s a fair amount of spicy mustards on the market, but there’s no archetype by which the others are made.

Well, if there was a standard by which spicy mustards were made, it would be a safe bet that Danny Cash would stomp all over it with some steel-toed boots. This mustard has some true appeal to it. Unlike some spicy or chilehead-themed mustards, this one comes in the traditional yellow plastic squeeze-able container. No fiddling with plastic nipples or shaking the glass bottle to get a glob of condiment out. Entirely user-friendly, you can squeeze out as much (or as little) of this mustard as you desire, not to mention anywhere you want it. A nice feature for a condiment, to be sure. Also, it has the same great label that I mentioned in my review for the Ragin Red hot sauce. No matter how you slice it, motorcycles with flaming wheels are just cool. Even Hollywood thinks so. It makes us think a little bit about the Nicholas Cage movie “Ghost Rider“, which was neither a great adaption from the comic book nor a great movie. However, check this out:

Ultimately, I think we’ll judge the mustard as far cooler than the movie…but I digress. The description from the bottle reads like this:

Danny Cash’s Flaming Habanero Mustard is the first gourmet mustard from Danny Cash. Spiked with Habanero and Serrano peppers, and the great taste of garlic and lime, this mustard is out of control. Anything that’s good with regular mustard is great with this stuff. Add a serious kick to hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, and anything else you can think of.

Ingredients: habanero and serrano chile peppers, fresh garlic, no. 1 grade yellow mustard seed, vinegar, lime juice, flake sea salt

Taste: It’s a pretty finely blended mustard that tastes strongly first of garlic, then serrano pepper. I taste the heat of the habanero, but the taste manages to be more of a background thang rather than an up-front sorta taste. Once again, I feel that DC hit the nail on the head for heat…about 6/10. A simmering heat level that builds a little as you eat it, which is nice. The flavor is good enough that I enjoyed simply tasting it right out of the container.

Like mustard? Then this mustard is truly one that you can put on or with anything you would use mustard with in food. Spice up your egg/chicken/tuna salad with a garlicky habanero kick! I enjoyed using this mustard as a dip for my french fries as opposed to catsup. As a condiment, it truly shines and there wasn’t a sandwich, hot dog, or burger that failed to benefit from this tasty chilehead mustard. For those ubiquitous chicken nuggets.fingers, this mustard also scores huge points for both taste and heat.

Overall recommendation: The spicy mustard train just keeps on a-rollin’ with this fine product from Danny Cash. Don’t just limit its use to mundane condiment usage, as this mustard does so well in a variety of uses. Medium-hot and tasty with a serious garlic-serrano bite, you will enjoy trying to find new ways to use this mustard in your cooking. Don’t forget to save some for your hot dogs, though. Once you try them with this mustard on it, you may not be able to enjoy them with any other condiment again. Great-tasting stuff. Enjoy!

When we started making this mustard in our church, the little old lady bridge and pinocle players would make deviled eggs with it. The whole congregation was addicted.

There’s a lot of good hot sauces out there, but not so many really good spicy mustards. That’s why we gave this one such an enthusiastic thumbs-up!

Thanks Joe! I like your reviews as they are very well written. This mustard was invented to take hot dogs, burgers, and brats to the next level!
