The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

sexabi.JPGBLAIR’S SEXABI Hot Sauce
“…with Horny Goat Weed!”

I found this at Spec’s Liquor Store which opened their first store here in Austin recently. Specs is a grocery-store sizd store with a huge selection of wine, beer, cigars, “ finer” foods ( they even have a deli and olive bar!) and of course Liquor …and lots of it. Not to mention a nice selection of hot sauces I haven’t seen in any of our local supermarkets. Specs is a Houston company that is opening several stores in Austin. Excitement!!

Anyway, I digress.

The splashy art on the label of this declares that this is the “hot sauce of love” and it contains “ horny goat weed” . Mmm kay, I’m usually game for anything so why not try it?

This sauce has an almost “gelatinous” consistency…sort of like…I hate to say it…thick gravy. Weird. It smells sweet and of mangos which are a primary ingredient.

The taste features mango and passion fruit up front with a spice medley following. I detected almost no heat whatsoever (my bottle was the mild style, unfortunately…they didn’t have the “hot” version. ) No one spice really stands out to me although this stuff contains cloves, wasabi and even habaneros. The sweetness is almost cloying. The mangos and passion fruit are the main impression. This stuff is more like some sort of liquid candy than a hot sauce.

Aside from the novelty of a hot sauce with “horny goat weed”, I could see this making a nice glaze for chicken or pork if combined with something containing HEAT!

Different. I have to give it points for imagination.

Heat 0/10
Taste 7/10

Answer: I had no idea it was out of production since as recently as this week I’ve seen it on retailers’ shelves. I’ve also not seen any other reviews of it…so there.

Sadly, it was the only hot sauce my wife could tolerate. I used it anytime i would add butter, and she liked it. Mind you, she thinks the mildest BBQ sauces are too hot for her sometimes.

And my last bottle is almost empty. (I know I can get more, and the shelf life is good and all, but still. If only I could find a good replacement for it in my fridge.)

Nick! You can order it from “Heather’s Heat and Flavor” and it’s $6.99 a bottle plus shipping.
