While we have our share of hot & spicy stuff made here in the central part of Ohio (see CaJohn, Montezuma, Gecko Gary), we wanted to point out some yummy goodness made down in Chillicothe, Ohio. Chillicothe is south of Columbus by an hour or so, and is home to Ben’s Sweet & Hot Mustard. It was a Golden Chile winner back in 2004, and has been pleasing people in various formulations since 2001. You can read a little about the Neff family and their wonderful-sounding mustard in this article from the Chillicothe Gazette:

Karen Neff never was really big on mustard.

“I hated mustard, couldn’t stand it,” she said.

That distaste is exactly what got her, her husband, Bruce, and their children involved in making their own brand of golden delight - something that would be palatable for Karen - about 10 years ago. A friend had brought some mustard over thinking Karen, 54, would finally find one she liked, but it just wasn’t good enough.
“I thought if I start working with this recipe, I could come up with something better,” she said.

As big fans of cooking, she and Bruce, 58, took to the stove mixing together jalapeno peppers and mustard seed.

“Initially, it was really hot. People like a little bit of zing, but not so much that it burns your tongue off,” Karen said, adding she does like to make her own personal blend hotter than what she does for the public.
