The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

Despite a blustery, cool rainy day here in central Ohio, we ventured out for a little bit of fun today. After attending a birthday for one of our son Ari’s classmates at Magic Mountain, we decided to pick up some take out chicken wings from Quaker Steak & Lube to relish during our evening of watching some NFL football. Our last experience at The Lube was fairly mediocre. Service was marginal and Linda’s hot wings were a bit overcooked. Since we’ve had good experiences elsewhere with their wings (Cleveland), we chalked that up to a bad night at the ol’ wing joint and decided to visit again at a later time.

Much later. Our return visit took us over 6 months for it to happen. Perhaps getting our order as carry-out and avoiding the whole wait staff experience would alter our tainted view from our last visit. Only one way to find out, and so we ventured in to get our wings. Linda ordered the Hot heat level wings, seen below:

At a modest 3000 Scoville units, these were certainly no hotter than your average jalapeno. That said, they were perfectly spiced for Linda and pretty well-cooked. So far, so good. Joe, on the other hand, decided to go for broke and hit the top of their heat scale and ordered their Atomic wings, seen below:

These wings had some schwerve to them, and Joe didn’t finish his order. At 150,000 Scoville, these had more than enough capsaicin-fueled heat to get his attention, and Joe only ate about 10 of his 15 wings before calling it quits. Not just for the sake of heat, but also because one too many appetizers beforehand didn’t leave enough extra room in his tummy to ruminate those extra wings. Admittedly, Joe has been so used to hot wings from most places not living up to their advertised heat level that these were both a pleasure, a surprise, and the tiniest bit painful. Good, good, and more good. Boo-YAH!

This is what the Atomic wing sauce looks like if you buy it from The Lube. It comes in a small bottle that has a dropper to dispense it sparingly. We’ve had a bottle of it at home for quite some time, but we’ve been awash in so many other good wing sauces that we’ve never opened it to try it for ourselves.

It doesn’t lack for heat or flavor, but you’d have to give the nod to heat for this sauce. For once, the Lube finally cooked up a bunch of spicy wings worthy of trip across town to get them. At 150K Scoville, they’re a far cry hotter than most other hot wings we’ve had recently. No threat to DefCon in terms of flavor, but hey…not many have been.

The Lube finally redeemed itself. It won’t keep us from firing up our deep-fryer to make our own, but at least we’ve replaced the bad memory of our last trip there with a good one. And Joe will use the asbestos toilet paper to prove it…;)
