More than any time in recent memory, I have truly become “the hot sauce guy” at work. Since I work in & around an operating room, I am getting an increasing number of the OR crew (nurses, techs, surgeons, etc) who are asking me about hot sauce, what I like to eat, where I get it, what food I put it on, etc.

Yesterday, one of my co-workers mentioned to me, “You need to talk to Rachael. She puts hot sauce on everything she eats.”

A-ha! Now that’s my kinda woman! A little more digging, I found out that Rachael (an OR nurse) keeps a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot around that she douses her food with when she eats. Knowing this, my duty was clear. I simply had to enlighten her that Frank’s was little more than chile pepper-flavored vinegar and that she should try some other sauces to see what she might like.

Digging through our cupboard full of hot sauces (some 30+ of them), I went looking for an unopened bottle that I could gift to Rachael. Lurking in the back, was this bottle of Baboon Ass Habanero Hot Sauce. Courtesy of Ron Levi, we had an extra bottle as a result of a Feature we did on RoJo’s Gourmet Foods one year ago. I’ve been using the Bucky Goldstien’s sauce for a while (and have loved it), so I felt good about passing along a bottle of the Baboon Ass.

Catching Rachael at lunch today, I produced the bottle. I told her, “Please don’t let the name of the sauce imply what I think of you here at work.” With a wry smile, she took the bottle…and giggled immensely. As a crowd began to gather to see her new swag, it was obvious that both Rachael and her fellow OR nurses were fascinated by the fact that I would go out of my way to give her a bottle of hot sauce.

Hey, we chileheads need to stick together…and share our hot sauce. Hopefully, she’ll like it. I just hope she doesn’t finish it too quickly and ask me for another bottle…;)
