The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. Makers of some novel spicy nuts and a few hot sauces, we became acquainted with them at this past Jungle […]

We have really enjoyed Scotty B’s sauces a great deal here at home, as evidenced by the the Scotty B’s Feature we wrote a while ago. When given a chance to sample to try out some of the new stuff that Scotty B had ready for release, we were more than happy to accept a bottle or two for our devious culinary uses. We missed out on the opportunity to be the first to review one (see this Oblivion sauce review ), but we are the first that we know of to write down some thoughts on Scotty’s new Jalapeno sauce, dubbed “Green With Envy.”

One of the first thing we noticed was the size of the bottle. These are not the five-ounce bottles of sauce that you’re used to seeing on grocery store and hot shop shelves. This is bottle is a whopping twelve ounces of green Jalapeno goodness. It may not fit on the display shelf like other bottles of similar ilk, but it’s big enough to fit just nicely in the fridge. Besides that, you’ll really want to eat it not display it…right?

Enough of the prologue, what’s in it? Scotty B tells us that it’s a delicate blend of:

Ingredients: jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, serrano peppers, yellow onion, lemon juice, distilled white vinegar, garlic, salt, ground black pepper, corn starch, spices

We noticed serrano peppers on the list, which was a nice addition to see. We’ve come to really appreciate the great taste and heat of the serrano, so it’s encouraging to see this used in the sauce.

Pouring some into a spoon, we see this:

It’s a bit thicker than it looks, and has a nice consistency which pours fairly evenly. Too many sauces are a little too watery, but this one clings to food just nicely right out of the bottle.

The taste…oh, the taste!! Ooh-la-lah! The taste is simply out of this world. Unless like some sauces which you don’t feel like you can use on many kinds of food, we struggled to find any foods that this sauce failed to make taste better. From meat to dairy to use a dip, this sauce simply excelled beyond expectation. The heat is very manageable and moderate, probably about a 5.5/10 on the heat scale. Mild enough for wide uses, but warm enough to tantalize any chilehead’s palate. The other ingredients are blended in such that none seems to predominate, and it really allows a great fresh jalapeno taste to be gotten with this sauce.

Bottom line…you’re likely to love this sauce. When we get outside the type of sauce we like most (habanero for Joe, chipotle for Linda), we can be kinda finicky and critical of mediocre stuff. This is so far above mediocre as to defy description. Joe thinks it’s probably one of the best three jalapeno sauces he’s ever tried. Get ahold of Scotty and see if you can get some for yourself once he starts selling these bottles. All he needs is a cool label (which we know he’ll have), and this will be a bottle of jalapeno sauce you’ll not want to be without.
