The Hot Zone

Spicy snacks that are actually both good and spicy are hard to come by, but Kentucky’s own KP’s Specialty Pepper Products has a formula for products that have every chance at becoming hugely popular. When someone tells me they don’t like fruit salsas I tell them that I have a special way of using them where the full flavor of the salsa comes to life. That special way is…

nachos.

Now, I’m not talking your ordinary nachos here. No, no, no. I’m talking habanero cheddar nachos. I use my favorite chips (Blue Chips from Garden of Eatin) and any habanero cheddar you can get your hands on. The easiest to find is Cabot Habanero Cheddar.

Shown here is a very plain version. They don’t have to be fancy to taste yummy. They just need to be hot.

I had a favorite fruit salsa to use, but that is in the past now that I tried CaBoom! I used the Mandarin Orange Salsa. You taste the orange right away, but there’s also this wonderful peppery taste. Now, I’m not terribly fond of bold pepper taste in salsas, but it works tremendously well in fruit salsas. Plus, it makes a great thing even better; the combination of a spicy, saltiness to the habanero cheddar mixed with the sweet, peppery goodness of this salsa.

Trust me, folks. If you don’t typically like fruit salsas, make a batch of habanero cheddar nachos and give them another try. Definitely try one of the CaBoom Gourmet Fruit Salsas. CaJohn does a fantastic job.

Ingredients: tomatoes, mandarin oranges, onions, turbinado sugar, vinegar, jalapenos, salt, spices

P.S. Additional kudos go out to CaJohn for using Turbinado sugar. Essentially, Turbinado sugar is unrefined sugar. It is processed by the body a bit differently than typical white sugar. It’s good, good stuff!
