North Market Fiery Foods Festival
February 18, 2006
The weather may be drab and dreary, but a HEATWAVE is coming to the North Market on Saturday, February 18th in the form of our Fiery Foods Festival. Now in its third year, this event appeals to those with fortified stomachs as it features hot and spicy foods throughout the market.
Piquant foods to be highlighted at various merchants include: bushels of peppers and other produce, spicy ethnic specialties, chili bread, chocolate covered chili almonds, cheeses, mustards, ice cream, zippy cookies and more. There will be plenty of activities for folks who are faint of tastebud as well. In addition to the standard delicious but non-fiery market fare there will be cooking contests, live south-of-the-border inspired music, freebies for kids like maracas, sombreros and balloons, cowboy rope tricks and other zesty entertainment like a chili PEPPER eating contest! Cooking contests will highlight sizzling local culinary talent. New this year is the Chef Chili Challenge that will pit local chefs against one another as contenders for the title “North Market Chili Champ,” a trophy and $200 in North Market gift certificates. Customers can demonstrate their chili cooking acumen in a competition that will garner the first place winner $100 and the runner up $50 in North Market gift certificates. Those showing off their salsa making skills can win a first prize of $50 and second prize $25 in market gift certificates. Entrants to all cooking contests must include at least three ingredients obtained from the North Market (verified by receipts). He (or she) with the most resilient mouth can enter our chile pepper eating contest. Eating their way through a progression of hotter and hotter chiles, the last one standing will claim $50 in North Market gift certificates and a special trophy. “This event will launch you right out of your winter doldrums via your tastebuds,” said David Wible, Executive Director of the North Market. “If you love foods that bite you back, the North Market’s Fiery Foods Festival is the place to be on February 18.” Fiery Foods Festival Schedule:
